AJ Mullarkey

My name is AJ, and I was part of Kandy’s clubs for 15 years in total. At the age of 4, I first walked through Kandy’s doors, without a clue of the opportunity, memories and family I would create.

My Story

From the moment I stepped in, I became addicted. Addicted to the sport, the culture and the family environment. I spent most of my childhood in the gym, 6 days a week and every weekend. I went on to pass my coaching qualifications and coached my own gymnasts which gave me another reason to fall in love with the sporting world.  It taught me what it meant to be disciplined, motivated and driven, which has moulded the mindset I have today.

At the age of 10, my Dad was sadly taken from us, myself, my mum and my 3 brothers. As much as I had to step up at home, Kandy always created a safe space for me to retreat to every night, whether it was to laugh and act like a kid, or cry with the support of my team.   I became the woman I am today under the guidance and care of Kandy and Andrew, they weren’t only coaches, they were second parents. They taught me to never give up on my dreams and to be disciplined and dedicated to the things I love.

I could not be more grateful for Kandy’s clubs and the support it gave myself and my teammates. It opened the opportunity to travel the world, compete with the best and represent our country. From gymnastics to sports aerobics, cheerleading and trampolining, Kandy and Andrew put their all into the clubs and supporting the girls within them (sometimes before their own children lol).

I am now 25 years of age, I run my own event styling business called Mullarkey Events, and have a house with my boyfriend near Leeds. I still speak to Kandy near enough every week and on occasion see the girls from the gym. We created such an incredible bond, with people who support one another in every path of life, and in all of our different professions!

I owe such a great deal to Kandy and Phoenix High Flyers, and I will forever be grateful that I was part of something that impacted my life for the better!
